Overview.
This webinar will highlight the specific ethical considerations to be aware of when working with non-ordinary states of consciousness. These considerations include increased vulnerability and suggestibility, which create the need for a careful non-directive approach and increased cultural humility. The webinar will discuss aspects of consent in PAT and how it can be more complex than traditional psychotherapy. Additional topics will include how to navigate touch in PAT, power dynamics and boundaries. Lastly, this discussion will include the increased importance of therapist competence and therapist self-regulation.
Objectives.
- Apply ethical principles to the practice of psychedelic-assisted therapy.
- Develop informed consent procedures that address client well-being and agency.
- Demonstrate understanding of best practices for maintaining ethical boundaries, including the role of touch, power dynamics, and therapist self-regulation in PAT.
About the Presenter.
Dr. Genesee Herzberg is a clinical psychologist from the California Bay Area. She received her doctorate from the California Institute of Integral Studies and her undergraduate degree from Georgetown’s School of Foreign Service. She co-founded Sage Integrative Health, a holistic psychedelic clinic and training institute, Alchemy Community Therapy Center, a non-profit, sliding scale psychedelic clinic, and the International Alliance of MDMA Practitioners. She has worked as a trainer and supervisor in ketamine-assisted therapy through Sage and MDMA-assisted therapy through MAPS/Lykos, as well as guest teaching for a range of psychedelic therapy training programs, conferences, and podcasts. Genesee is an author and co-editor of the book Integral Psychedelic Therapy. Her clinical approach is depth-oriented, relational, somatic, and mindfulness-based, with a social justice lens, and she specializes in trauma recovery. She is passionate about making psychedelic medicine accessible to everyone who can benefit, developing innovative body-centered approaches to psychedelic healing, and promoting ethics and integrity as psychedelics go mainstream.
